Catenaa, Sunday, November 02, 2025- Representative Ro Khanna, a Democrat from California, introduced legislation aiming to prohibit elected officials from owning, creating, or trading cryptocurrencies. The proposal seeks to prevent potential conflicts of interest and financial misconduct among public servants.

Khanna cited concerns over President Donald Trump’s pardon of Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, alleging ties to corruption and illegal financial activities.

The bill would restrict elected officials from engaging in crypto activities, including investments and management of digital assets.

The move comes amid heightened scrutiny of cryptocurrency markets and their intersection with government oversight.

Lawmakers and regulators have increasingly voiced concerns about transparency, insider trading, and the potential for public officials to exploit crypto markets for personal gain.

Supporters of the legislation argue that banning crypto ownership for officials would enhance public trust, reduce conflicts of interest, and align financial conduct standards for politicians with those in other regulated sectors.

Critics, however, warn that the measure could limit personal freedoms and may be difficult to enforce across diverse digital asset holdings.

Khanna’s bill is part of a broader trend in US policy seeking to regulate cryptocurrencies more strictly, alongside measures targeting stablecoins, crypto exchanges, and institutional involvement in digital assets.

With crypto adoption continuing to grow among retail and institutional investors, lawmakers are focusing on preventing ethical lapses while balancing innovation in digital finance.

The legislation now faces committee review in the House of Representatives, where debate is expected over enforcement mechanisms, scope, and implications for public officials’ financial activities.

Rep. Ro Khanna proposes banning elected officials from owning or trading cryptocurrencies to prevent conflicts of interest and ensure ethical governance.
