Catenaa, Sunday, July 26, 2026- South Korean financial services group Mirae Asset has completed its acquisition of cryptocurrency exchange Korbit, finalizing a deal that marks the country’s first takeover of a digital asset exchange by an affiliate of a traditional financial institution.
The acquisition was completed after regulatory approvals, with Mirae Asset Consulting, an affiliate of Mirae Asset Financial Group, becoming Korbit’s largest shareholder.
Korbit announced that the required regulatory procedures had been completed, allowing Mirae Asset Consulting to assume control of the exchange.
The company has also filed revised regulatory documents to acquire additional Korbit shares valued at approximately $5.32 million, increasing its ownership from 92.06% to 97.15%. South Korean media reported that the additional purchase is expected to be completed on Friday.
Korbit said the transaction will not affect the operation of the exchange, customer deposits or the handling of users’ personal information.
Earlier this month, South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission approved the acquisition, describing it as the first case of an affiliate of a traditional financial group acquiring a domestic cryptocurrency exchange.
Mirae Asset Consulting said the acquisition is intended to secure future growth opportunities centered on digital assets, reflecting the group’s longer-term strategy to expand its presence in emerging financial technologies.
According to CoinGecko data, Korbit is South Korea’s fourth-largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume.
The exchange recorded approximately $4.3 million in trading volume over the past 24 hours, well behind market leader Upbit, which handled about $224.2 million during the same period.
Despite its relatively modest market share, Korbit remains one of South Korea’s longest-established cryptocurrency exchanges.
The acquisition highlights the growing convergence between traditional financial institutions and digital asset markets in South Korea.
Rather than building new crypto platforms from scratch, established financial groups are increasingly using acquisitions to gain regulated market access, digital asset expertise and existing customer infrastructure.
The deal also reflects increasing institutional confidence in South Korea’s regulated cryptocurrency sector as financial firms seek to position themselves for future growth in digital assets.
South Korea has one of the world’s most active cryptocurrency markets and maintains one of the industry’s most comprehensive regulatory frameworks. Until recently, ownership links between major financial groups and domestic cryptocurrency exchanges were limited. Mirae Asset’s acquisition of Korbit represents a notable shift in that landscape, illustrating how traditional financial institutions are increasingly incorporating digital asset businesses into their long-term growth strategies as cryptocurrencies become more integrated with mainstream finance.
