Layer 1 chains specialize for 2026

Catenaa, Monday, December 29, 2025-Layer 1 blockchain networks are entering 2026 more fragmented and specialized after a year marked by weak token prices, shifting user behavior and record stablecoin growth.

Market data from 2025 shows speculative activity clustering around high-throughput chains, while Ethereum strengthened its role as a settlement and data layer as usage moved toward Layer 2 networks.

Retail trading remained driven by memecoins, sending liquidity to Solana and BNB Chain, where fast execution and low fees supported short-term flows.

Solana led decentralized exchange volumes early in the year, boosted by meme launches that briefly dominated network revenue. As interest cooled, volumes evened out with Ethereum and BNB Chain, exposing reliance on speculative catalysts.

Ethereum followed a different path. Mainnet fees fell to multi-year lows, while transactions surged on Layer 2s such as Base, reinforcing Ethereum’s position as infrastructure rather than a trading venue.

BNB Chain paired faster block times with cultural momentum, drawing both meme activity and growing stablecoin transfers.

Adjusted data shows it processing more than 100 million stablecoin transfers per month, supported by fee-free programs and new dollar-linked tokens.

Stablecoins emerged as the clearest product with broad demand. More than $90 billion in net issuance during 2025 lifted total supply by nearly half.

That growth pushed some networks to design around stablecoin use alone, spawning early “stablechains” built for payments and settlement.

Specialization also deepened across privacy, performance and app-specific chains. Privacy networks regained attention, performance chains chased exchange-like speed, and app chain hubs expanded shared infrastructure models.

Analysts expect this fragmentation to persist into 2026, increasing reliance on interoperability as users route activity across chains built for narrow, defined purposes.
