Catenaa, Monday, July 27, 2026- Blockchain networks are preparing for a future where artificial intelligence, rather than humans, becomes their fastest-growing customer base, as Ripple projects a sharp increase in AI-driven transactions on the XRP Ledger.

RippleX Head of Engineering Ayo Akinyele said agentic transactions recently surpassed one million on XRP Ledger and could climb beyond 10 million in the near term before reaching 100 million within the next few years as AI infrastructure continues to mature.

The milestone signals more than growing network activity. It reflects an emerging machine economy where autonomous software agents increasingly buy services, exchange value and settle payments without requiring human intervention.

Ripple expects rapid expansion in agentic payments, which are blockchain transactions initiated by AI-powered software acting independently on behalf of users.

According to RippleX, XRP Ledger’s fast settlement times of three to five seconds and predictable transaction costs make it well suited for machine-to-machine commerce.

Current activity largely involves AI agents purchasing APIs, datasets and digital services needed to complete assigned tasks.

Ripple also said ecosystem partners are onboarding merchants that will eventually enable AI agents to purchase physical goods and services through XRP Ledger.

The company views these developments as the next phase of blockchain-enabled automation.

Blockchain has traditionally been designed around human users.

Individuals create wallets, approve transactions and interact directly with decentralised applications.

Agentic payments fundamentally change that model.

Instead of humans initiating every transaction, autonomous software agents can independently purchase computing resources, cloud services, data, digital content and other online infrastructure as they execute tasks.

This transforms blockchain networks from payment systems serving people into financial infrastructure supporting autonomous software economies.

The long-term significance extends beyond XRP Ledger.

The first billion blockchain users may not be people at all. They could be AI agents operating continuously across digital marketplaces.

Unlike human users, AI agents can transact around the clock, negotiate services automatically and complete payments in real time without relying on conventional banking systems.

That creates entirely new demand for blockchain settlement networks optimised for speed, predictable costs and programmable payments.

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly capable of executing complex workflows, autonomous transactions may become as common as today’s automated cloud computing requests.

The evolution also strengthens the case for programmable digital assets as the native payment layer of machine economies.

Ripple’s participation in the x402 Foundation highlights the industry’s broader ambitions.

The organisation brings together companies including AWS, Google, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Coinbase and Circle to develop standards enabling AI applications to purchase online services automatically.

Rather than focusing solely on cryptocurrency adoption, the initiative aims to build payment infrastructure for software capable of acting independently across the internet.

Industry participants increasingly view interoperable machine payments as a critical building block for the next generation of AI-powered digital services.

Ripple’s projection of tens of millions of agentic transactions is significant not because of the numbers themselves, but because of what they represent.

Blockchain is beginning to evolve from infrastructure designed primarily for people into infrastructure built equally for intelligent software.

If autonomous AI agents become routine participants in digital commerce, blockchain networks may ultimately process more machine-generated payments than human transactions, marking one of the most profound shifts in the history of digital finance.

Agentic payments refer to transactions initiated by autonomous AI software rather than manually approved by humans. As AI systems become capable of independently completing tasks, they increasingly require mechanisms to purchase APIs, computing power, storage, datasets and other digital services. Traditional payment systems are not designed for billions of automated microtransactions occurring continuously between software applications. Blockchain networks offer programmable settlement, low transaction costs and global availability, making them attractive infrastructure for machine-to-machine commerce. Ripple and several other technology companies are helping develop common payment standards through the x402 Foundation, reflecting growing expectations that autonomous AI will become a significant participant in the global digital economy.
