O2 Plans Starlink Satellite Service to Challenge Vodafone

O2 will launch Starlink-based satellite service in 2026 to boost UK coverage

Catenaa, Tuesday, November 04, 2025- O2 will launch its O2 Satellite service in the first half of 2026, using Starlink’s low-Earth orbit network to expand mobile coverage across the UK, putting pressure on rival Vodafone.

The service will initially support messaging, mapping, and location apps in areas beyond terrestrial network reach, with broader app functionality planned over time. O2 aims to cover more than 95% of the UK landmass within 12 months of launch, aligning with Ofcom’s push for direct-to-cell services in early 2026.

Vodafone has partnered with AST SpaceMobile for its satellite connectivity and tested the technology, including a video call earlier this year, but has yet to announce a retail launch in the UK.

BT and EE are also reported to be exploring Starlink-based options, signaling a growing direct-to-cell race among operators.

O2 has not disclosed pricing, leaving open whether the service will be bundled with existing plans or offered separately. The launch is expected to coincide with broader spectrum licence updates from Ofcom, which are intended to facilitate commercial satellite mobile services on sub-3 GHz bands.

By entering the satellite market first, O2 positions itself to close rural coverage gaps and enhance its network capabilities while competitors assess timing and pricing strategies.

Analysts say the move underscores the increasing importance of satellite technology in mobile networks, particularly for messaging and essential app connectivity in remote regions.
