Nokia, LMT Partner to Deploy 5G Tactical Defence Networks in Baltics

CATENAA, Wednesday, November 12, 2025-  Nokia and Latvian operator LMT are collaborating to deploy high-capacity, secure 5G tactical communications for military operations in the Baltics. The system will integrate Nokia’s 5G radio technology with LMT’s existing defence solutions to support coalition forces, unmanned vehicles, sensors, and battlefield teams with real-time data exchange.

The joint solution is designed to enhance situational awareness, interoperability, and operational readiness across national and allied forces. LMT President Juris Binde said the partnership strengthens security and resilience for mission-critical operations, while Giuseppe Targia, Nokia Head of Space and Defence, highlighted low-latency, high-speed connectivity as key to modernizing tactical capabilities.

The initiative builds on existing cooperation at Latvia’s Ādaži NATO base, which hosts Europe’s first 5G military testbed. Nokia has supplied its Banshee portable 5G tactical network to LMT and other allied units, including the U.S. Marine Corps Tactical Systems Support Activity. The kit provides high-speed, long-range, secure communication designed for rapid deployment in demanding environments.

The collaboration coincides with Nokia’s broader research into next-generation networks. The company recently signed a joint research agreement with KDDI Research to advance 6G technologies, focusing on energy efficiency, distributed core networks, and resilient communications capable of maintaining operations during infrastructure failures or natural disasters.

This partnership highlights growing interest in applying 5G and emerging mobile technologies to defence operations in Europe, offering militaries secure and adaptable communications while supporting modernization along NATO’s eastern flank.
