US DOE, AMD Team Up on $1B Supercomputers

Catenaa, Sunday, November 02, 2025-The US Department of Energy has formed a $1 billion partnership with Advanced Micro Devices to build two supercomputers aimed at advancing scientific research, national security, and artificial intelligence applications.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright and AMD CEO Lisa Su announced the project on Monday, highlighting its potential to accelerate fusion energy research, cancer treatment simulations, and management of nuclear arsenals.

The first machine, Lux, will deploy AMD’s MI355X AI chips and is expected to come online within six months. The system is co-developed with Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory and is projected to deliver roughly three times the AI capacity of current supercomputers.

The second, more advanced system, Discovery, will use AMD’s MI430 high-performance AI chips and is slated for delivery in 2028, with full operations beginning in 2029.

Both machines will combine central processing units, networking chips, and specialized AI accelerators to support demanding simulations and large-scale data analysis.

The DOE will host the supercomputers, while AMD and its partners provide the technology and funding. Both sides will share access to the computational capacity.

Officials described the initiative as the first of many collaborations between DOE labs and private industry to advance AI and high-performance computing in the United States.

DOE officials said the new supercomputers could make significant strides in replicating fusion reactions on Earth, improving drug discovery at the molecular level, and enhancing national security applications, including nuclear weapons management.
