NextEra Plans 15 GW Power for Data Centers

NextEra plans 15 GW for data centers

Catenaa, Sunday, December 14, 2025-NextEra Energy announced plans to build 15 gigawatts of new power generation dedicated to data center hubs across the US by 2035, with potential expansion to 30 gigawatts, CEO John Ketchum said.

The initiative includes a partnership with Google to develop three gigawatt-scale data center campuses, with plans to add more locations over time.

NextEra, the largest US renewable energy developer through NextEra Energy Resources and owner of Florida Power & Light, also operates nuclear and natural gas plants.

The company said the new data center hubs will use a mix of energy sources, including recently announced plans to restart Iowa’s Duane Arnold nuclear plant under a power purchase agreement with Google.

The planned 15-gigawatt target is considered conservative, with each gigawatt capable of powering over 800,000 average US households.

The expansion supports NextEra’s broader strategy of adding four to eight gigawatts of new gas generation by 2032 and developing a 20-gigawatt pipeline of gas-powered capacity.

Ketchum acknowledged that rising power demands from AI-driven data centers could affect affordability.

He suggested that hyperscale technology companies can address this by bringing and funding their own power infrastructure when committing to new facilities.

NextEra shares closed down about 3% following the announcement.

The company views the plan as a strategic alignment with growing demand for data center capacity while maintaining flexibility across renewable, nuclear, and fossil fuel energy sources.
