Catenaa, Saturday, February 07, 2026-Rogers Communications has extended its direct-to-cell satellite service to all mobile customers in Atlantic Canada, offering free access in a region where terrestrial coverage remains limited.
The service, previously bundled only with higher-tier 5G+ plans, now covers the four eastern provinces, Newfoundland Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick, where only 28% of the population has reliable mobile coverage.
Customers can make voice calls and use messaging apps even in areas lacking traditional cell service.
Rogers launched the beta version of its satellite service in July 2025, offering text messaging and emergency services. The full launch in December added apps including Google Maps, AccuWeather, X, and WhatsApp, enabling voice and video calling via satellite.
Full data and voice features remain under development. Customers on the C$78.75 per month Ultimate plan and C$58.75 Popular plan received one year of free satellite access, while subscribers of other carriers can join the service for C$15 per month.
The service relies on low-Earth orbit satellite infrastructure, providing coverage where terrestrial network expansion would be costly.
Rogers said beta users sent more than one million text messages in six months, highlighting demand for remote connectivity.
The company continues to monitor uptake, particularly in Atlantic Canada, and is evaluating long-term subscription interest.
Officials emphasize the satellite option adds an extra layer of network coverage, complementing Rogers’ existing mobile infrastructure.
