Catenaa, Tuesday, November 25, 2025-Bitmain has faced a months long US investigation into whether its bitcoin mining machines could threaten national security, according to a report citing a federal official and others familiar with the inquiry.
The probe, led by the Department of Homeland Security under the name Operation Red Sunset, examined whether the machines could enable remote access for spying or disrupt the power grid.
The investigation followed rising concern over Chinese linked mining sites near sensitive US facilities. Those sites often used Bitmain hardware.
Senate investigators earlier warned that Bitmain devices could be manipulated from China. Analysts said chip and firmware checks took place at US ports.
The review ran alongside White House security discussions that began under the Biden administration and continued into the early months of the Trump administration. Officials did not disclose findings. The status of the inquiry remains uncertain.
Bitmain rejected suggestions that its machines can be remotely controlled. The company said it complies with US rules and said the claims are false.
It added that it is not aware of any probe named Operation Red Sunset and said past detentions of its hardware stemmed from routine checks.
The issue gained fresh attention as Trump family members expanded their bitcoin mining interests. Their venture, American Bitcoin, bought thousands of Bitmain units this year.
A spokesperson for the firm said it tested the equipment and found no remote access issues. Trump officials said family business ties have no bearing on federal reviews.
US officials examined whether Bitmain mining devices could pose national security risks.
