Ethereum Smart Accounts Could Launch Within a Year, Vitalik Buterin Says

Catenaa, Friday, March 06, 2026-Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said the network’s account abstraction feature known as smart accounts could arrive within the next year through the Hegota upgrade and EIP-8141.

The feature will allow wallets to function as programmable apps, supporting recoverable keys, multi-signature authorization, batch transactions, and gas payments in tokens other than Ether.

Account abstraction changes the traditional Ethereum transaction model.

Instead of a single action signed by a private key, transactions are structured into frames that separately handle authorization, execution, and fee payment.

This enables more complex wallet functionality, including scheduled operations, automated contract interactions, and fee sponsorship through third-party paymasters or decentralized exchanges.

Buterin emphasized that the upgrade aligns with Ethereum’s cypherpunk philosophy by reducing reliance on centralized intermediaries.

It is expected to improve usability for privacy-focused tools such as Railgun and Tornado Cash by integrating transactions into a general-purpose mempool, bypassing public transaction broadcasters.

The upgrade will apply to both new and existing accounts, creating a unified framework across the network.

Buterin also highlighted longer-term plans for quantum-resistant protections covering validator signatures, stored data, user authentication, and zero-knowledge proofs.

Scaling improvements, including shorter block slot and finality times, are also under consideration to accelerate transaction settlement.

In related developments, Buterin endorsed the Fork-Choice Enforced Inclusion Lists (FOCIL) upgrade, which will require validators to include all valid transactions in blocks, preventing censorship and ensuring fair treatment of smart-account and privacy-focused transactions.
