Base Layer 2 to Exit Optimism, Move to Unified Base-Operated Stack

Catenaa, Friday, February 27, 2026-Coinbase-incubated Base announced it will move away from Optimism’s Superchain ecosystem, consolidating its foundational software into a unified Base-operated stack, according to a Wednesday blog post.

The shift will replace Base’s reliance on the OP Stack, Flashbots, and Paradigm components with a single, optimized repository.

Base plans to add an independent signer to its security council and simplify sequencer operations, reducing coordination and maintenance overhead caused by multiple teams managing separate repositories.

Developers emphasized that the protocol remains open source, allowing alternative client implementations to stay compatible across hard forks.

Base will continue as a Stage 1 rollup under Vitalik Buterin’s classification, remaining temporarily compatible with the OP Stack.

Node operators must migrate to the new Base client for upcoming hard forks. Base V1 will add Fusaka support and replace Optimistic proofs with Base-specific TEE/ZK proofs.

Two additional hard forks are planned to further sever reliance on Optimism, with Base V3 aligning with the upcoming Glamsterdam Ethereum update.
