Apple Names New Leader for AI Division

Amar Subramanya appointed to lead Apple’s AI division after John Giannandrea retires

Catenaa, Thursday, December 04, 2025-Apple said Monday its longtime artificial intelligence chief will retire and named a former Microsoft and Google executive to take the role.

John Giannandrea will step down next spring after serving as senior vice president since 2018. Amar Subramanya will take charge of Apple’s AI unit.

Subramanya worked on research efforts at Microsoft and previously held roles at Google’s DeepMind group, according to public records.

He will report to software chief Craig Federighi. Apple said other AI teams once under Giannandrea will shift to operations chief Sabih Khan and services head Eddy Cue.

Apple revealed the move as tech analysts claim the company trails rivals building large AI systems. Its Apple Intelligence suite launched in 2024. Early reviews from users and critics have pointed to slow progress and delays. A planned upgrade to the Siri assistant slipped into 2026.

Apple said Subramanya will guide work on foundation models, research programs and safety measures. The company continues to pitch on device processing. Competitors such as Microsoft, Google and Meta have built large data centers for AI training. Apple has struck agreements with OpenAI to add ChatGPT access within some products.

Apple shares have gained this year but trail other major tech firms investing in AI. Executives have said spending on new projects will grow. The company said efforts target more capable software and new features across current devices.
